Nancy Alexander
I learned to spin in 1982 and never looked back. In the next two years I had created so much yarn that the only option seemed to be learning to weave. Training under a Devotee of Swedish weaving methods, I had so much fun that I opened a weaving shop in Ellsworth where spinners and weavers from Hancock and Washington County would gather for spinning, classes in basketry or designing your own clothes, or organic dyeing. The shop closed when our family left for a year in Charlottesville but my interest never flagged. Always making room for my looms, I have dragged them from home to home and now they are finally nestled in on Islesboro. Weaving is like a lifelong sport like biking – you don’t need teammates or a fancy court or pool. All you need is some wood, string, and patience.
