Joan M. Losee
I have been painting and drawing for over 40 years. Although I primarily work in Oil, I have also worked in Watercolor, Egg Tempera, and Pastel. I graduated from Wellesley College in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art.
Most of my work is in Landscape and Portrait. I choose ordinary subjects and try to demonstrate their extraordinary emotion, beauty, and presence. I especially love the work of Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Robert Henri. I strive in my work to reach the strength of expression these artists achieved.
I believe one cannot break the rules until one has mastered the rules. With this in mind, I have participated in many workshops given by current artists whose work I admire. It is my hope my paintings reflect the excellent training I have had working with these artists. I am constantly striving to increase my proficiency and maintain a freshness in my artistic expression.
Over the past two years I have become increasingly interested and intrigued with the farms and landscapes of inland Maine. Many of my paintings reflect this interest, and the experience has broadened my knowledge of Maine and its vast resources.
