Photography

image of notecard

When I was 10 years old I was given a Kodak Duaflex II box camera, and I took my first photographs. The pictures came back a week later. They weren’t particularly good but I was hooked. Thus began a hobby which has grown increasingly serious as I have aged, and I have taken several courses at the Maine Media Center and exhibited in Maine, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Symptomatic of a curious and searching eye, my images cover a wide range of subjects and attitudes. They broadly fall into three categories: landscape, street and what I call anecdotal photographs. I am fortunate to be able to live in beautiful locations and am presented with scenes that I capture. In contrast I also enjoy exploring the streets of cities and capturing people and scenes that speak more of human activity. My anecdotal images are a combination of the two and are a result of my book photography, which focuses on places and regions. Occasionally I will make images that are more abstract and maybe mysterious than my usual fare.

My submissions to this show are images of Islesboro Crossing swimmers that were captured over the past two years as I followed them on their training sessions. Given that there will be no Crossing this year, I would like to donate any proceeds net of the IHS commission to Islesboro’s contribution to LifeFlight.

All photographs are printed with archival ink on archival paper. Duplicates are available. I can make larger or small prints upon request.

I have been fortunate to have published ten books of my images. The books contain what I call, for lack of other words, anecdotal pictures of particular regions or cities. They are available for order from the Maine Point Bookstore, Amazon, or my publisher, Schiffer Publishing.

Books of Images: Maine Coast Perspectives, Maine Out and About, Chester County Perspectives, Chester County Out and About, Eastern Shore Perspectives, Philadelphia Perspectives, Charleston Keepsake, Brandywine Valley Keepsake, The Jersey Shore Keepsake, Coastal Maine Keepsake.
